Therapy for ADHD In Calgary

What is ADHD?

ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how people focus, manage time, follow through on tasks, and regulate their energy and emotions. It’s often part of a broader category called neurodivergence, which refers to the natural differences in how brains work. This includes not only ADHD, but also autism, learning differences, and other ways of thinking and processing the world that differ from the “neurotypical” experience. These differences aren’t flaws, they’re part of human diversity. That said, living in a world that isn’t always built for neurodivergent brains can create real challenges, which therapy can help with.

Common Symptoms of ADHD:

  • Difficulty focusing or staying on task

  • Easily distracted or forgetful

  • Restlessness or feeling the need to move constantly

  • Trouble organizing tasks or managing time

  • Frequently losing things (like keys, phone, wallet)

  • Interrupting others or blurting things out

  • Struggles with following through on plans or projects

  • Mood swings or intense emotional reactions

  • Feeling overwhelmed in noisy or busy environments

  • Low self-esteem due to past struggles or criticism

Types of Therapy for ADHD

Somatic Therapy

Somatic therapy supports clients in tuning into the body’s signals and using movement, breath, or grounding techniques to self-regulate in moments of overwhelm

Internal Family Systems (IFS)

IFS can help clients explore the different "parts" of yourself in a gentle way to understand internal conflict and build compassion for your ADHD experience.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Helps you manage distractibility, build routines, and shift unhelpful self-talk that often comes with ADHD

Expressive Arts Therapy

Uses movement, sound, storytelling, or visual art. Using a sensory-rich approach can reduce overwhelm, support emotional regulation, and make therapy feel more accessible and affirming.

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)

DBT offers a structured, skill-based approach to help manage the emotional intensity and impulsivity that often come with ADHD.

EMDR

While EMDR isn’t a standard treatment for ADHD itself, it can be a powerful tool when trauma or deeply held self-beliefs are part of the picture
