Trauma Therapy In Calgary
What is Trauma?
Trauma isn’t just what happens to us; it’s also how our mind and body respond when something overwhelming, scary, or deeply painful happens. This could be a single event like an accident or assault, or ongoing experiences like childhood neglect, emotional abuse, or community violence. For many, trauma is also shaped by generational pain, systemic injustice, and experiences of racism or marginalization, especially in BIPOC communities. Even long after the event, your nervous system might still be reacting like the danger is happening right now. This can affect your emotions, your body, your relationships, and how you see yourself.
Common Symptoms of Trauma:
Flashbacks, nightmares, or intrusive thoughts
Feeling anxious or on edge a lot of the time
Trouble sleeping or staying asleep
Feeling numb, disconnected, or “shut down”
Avoiding reminders of the trauma (people, places, situations)
Feeling guilty, ashamed, or not good enough
Struggles with trust, connection, or boundaries
Physical issues like headaches, stomach aches, or chronic pain
Feeling like you’re always in survival mode
