Emotional Regulation Therapy In Calgary
What is Emotional Regulation?
Emotional regulation is your ability to understand, manage, and respond to your emotions in ways that feel balanced and helpful. It doesn’t mean ignoring or pushing feelings away… it means learning how to ride the waves of your emotions without getting overwhelmed, stuck, or reactive. For some people, emotional regulation can be harder due to past experiences, trauma, neurodivergence, or just not having had the chance to learn these tools earlier in life. However, emotional regulation is a skill, and like any skill, it can be learned and strengthened through therapy!
Common Signs You May Be Struggling with Emotional Regulation:
Feeling overwhelmed by emotions that come on quickly or feel very intense
Mood swings that feel hard to predict or control
Difficulty calming down after getting upset
Often feeling irritable, anxious, or shut down
Saying or doing things in the heat of the moment that you later regret
Avoiding emotions completely or numbing out
Trouble identifying or naming what you’re feeling
Feeling emotionally “out of control” or disconnected
Struggles in relationships due to reactive communication
Feeling ashamed or confused about your emotional responses
Types of Therapy for Emotional Regulation
EMDR
Uses guided eye movements and mind-body techniques to help your brain process overwhelming emotions so they feel less intense and easier to manage.
Somatic Therapy
Uses breath, movement, and body awareness to help you feel more grounded, release tension, and regulate your nervous system.
Internal Family Systems (IFS)
Works with different “parts” of you (like the anxious or overwhelmed part) to bring more calm, clarity, and regulation.
Accelerated Resolution Therapy
Uses eye movements and imagery to help your brain reprocess distressing memories and shift emotional reactions in your day-to-day life.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
Helps you notice and shift unhelpful thought patterns so you can respond to emotions with more clarity, balance, and self-compassion.
Expressive Arts Therapy
Invites you to explore and express emotions through creative outlets like art, music, or movement, offering new ways to process and regulate.
Narrative Therapy
Encourages you to externalize problems and rewrite emotional stories with compassion, promoting regulation through empowerment and meaning-making.
Depth Hypnosis
